Seeds of Empathy
Seeds of Empathy is a unique program that teaches social and emotional skills as well as literacy to preschool children during their critical developmental years.
The program is being piloted in 15 Alberta day cares, located in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Beaumont and will expand to include 65 day-care sites over three years.
Seeds of Empathy teaches preschoolers respect for and acceptance of others through guided interactions with a baby and parent. It also promotes early literacy skills including an introduction to books, letter recognition and the relationship of pictures to words. The literacy lessons focus on emotional themes like feeling loved and friendship, which are expanded on during the family visit.
The Alberta government contributed $1.7 million to run the program over the next three years.
