Youth Connections Information for Employers
Youth Connections offers you the chance to connect with motivated young adults who want to develop skills, explore work options and achieve meaningful employment. We target young people ages 16 to 24, who are no longer in school, are unemployed or underemployed and are looking for better career opportunities.
In addition to direct hiring, there are a variety of activities that give you the chance to meet a potential employee while providing a young worker with exposure to your workplace.
Job Shadowing
Job shadowing gives a young person the opportunity to observe someone in a field of work that he or she is interested in. The experience can run from a few hours to two or three days. During that time, the young person can observe the tasks involved in the job and have the opportunity to ask questions.
Work Experience
A work experience placement helps a young person make an informed career choice by receiving first-hand job experience. The youth becomes an entry-level employee in your business for the duration of the placement, which typically lasts from one to three weeks. This arrangement gives you the benefit of observing the work habits of the potential employee in your work environment without having to pay them. Some employers choose to hire work experience participants, although there is no expectation for employers to do so.
Work Study
In a work study program, the employer and employee prepare a schedule for mixing work and education. Depending on the individual and the needs of your business, this may include one or two courses or an entire program.
Information Interviewing
An information interview gives a young person the opportunity to meet with an expert in a field that he or she is interested in. The interview allows the young person the chance to ask questions that may help determine whether or not the career is one he or she wishes to pursue.
