The Ministry offers a variety of resources for young workers to both find employment and stay safe on the job. Whether you are working for the summer, full time or part time there are resources available for you.
First off, check out our list of job fairs also see the Canada-Alberta Job Bank for youth. In Calgary, youth can also take advantage of additional Employment, Training and Career Services.
All workers, including young people working in summer jobs, are covered by Alberta’s Employment Standards Code. The Code covers areas as minimum wage, hours of work, overtime and vacation pay. A number of these rules apply specifically to youth. For example, adolescents aged 12 to 14 can only work in certain jobs and youth aged 15-17 are not permitted to work during certain hours or work alone in some occupations.
Occupational Health and Safety regulations apply to all employees. Did you know, workers under the age of 25 are more likely to be injured on the job than older workers. Both employees and employers can learn how to protect young workers better. To learn more about young worker safety check out www.bloodylucky.ca as well as a series of student made videos promoting worker safety.
If you are employing young workers you can also learn more here.
The Ministry also supports the Alberta Learning Information Service which provides information on hundreds of potential occupations in addition to CareerInsite, a new comprehensive career planning tool for Albertans of any age.
The Building Alberta’s Workforce video highlights the free employment and recruitment services available to Alberta employers and job seekers. The video was created in partnership with the Leduc-Nisku Economic Development Authority’s Virtual Tradeshow.
